Update on support service for former timber workers exposed to PCP
The Ministry of Health has asked Allen & Clarke to investigate setting up a special support service for former sawmill workers who were exposed to pentachlorophenol (PCP).
Allen & Clarke sent out a consultation paper on possible options for a service in August 2009. One hundred and eighteen people responded to this document. We also held a meeting in Whakatane and a meeting in Tokoroa. We analysed what people told us and used this information to develop our initial thinking about possible services.
This short summary document [http://www.allenandclarke.co.nz/uploads/Summary_doc_111209.doc ] tells you about our initial thinking and what it means. It is a summary of the technical report [http://www.allenandclarke.co.nz/uploads/Prelim_think.doc].
Our thinking is not final. We need to do more work before we present our final recommendations to the Ministry of Health in February 2010. The Ministry of Health will then decide if there will be a special support service and if so, what it will look like. The Ministry of Health has not yet decided if services will be provided or funded.
Please let us know if you have more ideas about our initial thinking by 29 January 2010. This is not a formal consultation exercise but an opportunity to check our thinking. You can tell us by:
· Email: pcpss@allenandclarke.co.nz
· Phone: 04 890 7308 or 04 890 7300
