NATIONAL CONTRACEPTION GUIDELINES CONSULTATION PAPER
The Ministry of Health wants to build the quality and consistency of contraception services in New Zealand by developing national guidance on contraception. Guidance will be complemented by the development and implementation of national training. It is hoped that the guidelines and training will:
- increase access to effective contraception options for New Zealanders
- support informed choice
- increase uptake of long-acting reversible contraception, and
- support health practitioners to have consistent, culturally safe and youth friendly conversations on sexual health and contraception.
This consultation paper sets out Aotearoa New Zealand’s draft guidance on contraception counselling and specific contraceptive methods. It is based on a range of existing guidelines developed by competent authorities, targeted literature reviews on issues requiring consensus in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the views of the National Contraception Guidelines Steering Group. We are seeking feedback on this guidance. Your views will help to inform the development of robust guidance for health practitioners in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Consultation will be open for four weeks (19 June – 20 July); we welcome your submissions by Monday 20 July via email to [email protected].
Thank you for your contribution.
